About ArdmoreThe affluent community of Ardmore is a census-designated place located on Philadelphia's historic Main Line. While located primarily in Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, a smaller portion near Ardmore Park is located in Haverford Township in Delaware County. The segment in Haverford Township — not to be confused with the Main Line town of Haverford — while a nice area, is often not viewed as part of the Main Line. Consequently the property values are lower in that area of Ardmore. It is still, however, a very nice area to live, but the more coveted part of Ardmore falls within Lower Merion township in Montgomery County. Ardmore is one of the first Main Line towns encountered when exiting Philadelphia's west side, making it an extremely convenient destination for those commuting to center city. Originally named Athensville in 1853, it was renamed Ardmore by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1873 where it was a station. Ardmore's historic downtown is home to one of the largest shopping districts on the Main Line with some excellent and varied dining as well as some wonderful specialty shops, such as antique stores and gift shops. Ardmore is also adjacent to the second oldest shopping center in the United States, Suburban Square. Another Ardmore destination of note is the Merion Golf Club, a private course almost always rated among the greatest golf courses in the United States. The Merion Golf Club will be hosting the U.S. Open in 2013 and the Walker Cup in 2009.
Like everywhere else on the Main Line, excellent schools, low crime, and high but stable property values makes Ardmore an extremely desirable place to live. Ardmore neighbors the Main Line community of Wynnewood, with the two towns often working together and in fact sharing a civic association called ArdWood. |
